Does Home Depot Sell Traeger Pellets?

As one of Traeger’s premium retailers, Home Depot sells an extensive line of Traeger wood pellets, as well as other competitive brands of pellets.

This includes an extensive lineup of generic wood pellets and artisanal wood pellets that other national competitors might not carry.

Home Depot’s wood pellet lineup includes major names like Traeger, Louisiana Grills, and Camp Chef, as well as artisanal pellets made from repurposed whiskey barrel wood from Crown Royal or Jim Beam.

They also have discounted and generic pellets to fit just about any budget.

While you can use wood pellets from other brands in a Traeger grill, Traeger themselves doesn’t recommend it.

Their pellets have superior structural integrity which leaves less problematic wood fibers in the bottom of the hopper.

If you do use another brand of wood pellets like Pit Boss or Louisiana Grills, make sure to sift the pellets first to remove any trace wood fiber dust.

Then make it a point to purge the pellet hopper after every smoking session.

If your Traeger grill is damaged by using another brand of pellets Traeger might not honor the warranty repair.

What Pellets Does Home Depot Sell?

In addition to Traeger’s brand Home Depot also sells pellets from Knotty Wood, Kingsford, Louisiana Grills, Crown Royal Whiskey Barrel, Jim Beam Ol’ Hick, Camp Chef, Green Mountain, Bear Mountain, and Oklahoma Joes.

How Much Are Pellets at Home Depot?

Home Depot sells all of Traeger’s standard blends of wood pellets in 20-pound bags for $19.99.

This is the standard price you find them online, though Home Depot tends to have seasonal promotions as well as the opportunity to buy wood pellets in bulk.

Home Depot sells Knotty Wood Barbecue Company wood pellets are sold in 60-pound bundles with a special package of seasoned runs for $69.99.

They also sell single 20-pound bags of wood pellets for an average price of $19.99.

Kingsford sells an assortment of 100% named wood pellets and charcoal pellets at Home Depot for $15.99 to $18.99 for a 20-pound bag.

Louisiana Grills sells a 40-pound bag of wood pellets, at Home Depot for $29.99. This is a good deal per pound compared to Traeger pellets and a lot of the competitors in this niche.

Crown Royal sells wood pellets made from repurposed whiskey barrel wood in three 20-pound bags for $59.99.

This is a modest deal for bulk wood pellets and is great for anything where you want to accentuate natural oak smoke.

Jim Beam sells a 20-pound bag of their Ol’ Hick wood pellets at Home Depot for $22.99.

This is the best price per pound for any wood pellet brand in Home Depot’s lineup.

Can You Use Generic Pellets in a Traeger?

You can technically use any food-grade wood pellets in a Traeger grill without a major change in the grill’s performance. Though it’s wise to sift the pellets before adding them to the hopper to prevent loose food fibers from causing a possible auger jam.

Traeger uses a special process to create wood pellets that have high structural integrity.

This leaves less wood pellet fiber in the bag and hopper than most of their competitors.

You should also note that if you use another brand of wood pellets in your Traeger grill, and it is damaged by a burn back fire or an auger jam, Traeger might not cover the repair under their fine print warranty language.

You should never use wood pellets for a pellet furnace in a Traeger grill.

They have too many chemical binders to be considered “Food Safe” and can burn at a temperature so hot that it damages the grill’s internal components.

Should You Buy Pellets at Home Depot?

Home Depot has a lot of wood pellet varieties, which makes them a great place to find the perfect fuel for your Traeger grill.

They sell Traeger premium-grade pellets for the same price as the competitor stores, while also carrying some discounted brands, artisanal pellets, and generic pellets to fit just about any taste and budget.

Is it OK To Use Pit Boss Pellets in a Traeger?

Pit Boss and their Parent Company Louisiana Grills made a wide variety of high-quality wood pellets that will work in a Traeger grill.

Though they don’t have the same structural integrity as Traeger’s wood pellets, so it’s wise to sift the pellets through a coarse sieve before putting them in the hopper.

This will keep wood pellet fibers out of the hopper and auger shaft, to reduce the risk of auger jams and burn back fires, which could badly damage your Traeger grill.

Then purge the pellets from the hopper after every use to prevent them from breaking down in the hopper from prolonged exposure to humidity.

Traeger themselves recommends that you only use their brand of premium wood pellets in all their grills. If you use another brand and it ends up damaging the grill in some way, Traeger might not honor their repair under their warranty coverage.

Final Thoughts

Home Depot’s diverse lineup of wood pellets makes them a great place to find just the right wood pellets for your Traeger Grill.

They have discounted generic pellets, as well as premium artisanal wood pellets, at very competitive prices.

Even though you can safely use food-grade wood pellets from other brands Traeger advises against it. Traeger’s pellets are designed to leave less problematic wood fibers in the bottom of the hopper.

If you use Pit Boss or another brand, be sure to sift the pellets first to remove any trace wood fiber dust.

Then take the time to empty the pellet hopper after every smoking session to prevent humidity from breaking down the wood fibers.

Traeger might not honor the warranty repair if your grill is damaged by an auger jam or a burn back fire caused by another brand of pellets.
